Mummers’ Play

Once again we are very fortunate to have Prize Old Mummers from Portsmouth attending the Green Man Fest to perform their short Mummers’ Play around the town. Mummers’ plays are traditional folk plays that can be traced back to at least 1296. They have some comic content but like Jack in the Green their underlying story is about Summer’s triumph over Winter. The plays now have lots of modern/local variations and the theme of Prize Old Mummers 2024 play will be announced soon. See them at:

11am at The Weaving Shed/Il Fiume.

12pm in Westbury Gardens by the war memorial

1pm in The Stumble Inn, a friendly traditional local pub with well-kept real ales where you can relax without canned music, pool tables and fruit machines and just enjoy the banter. Children and dog friendly.

2pm in The Three Horseshoes: All you need to know about the Horseshoes is – “Brilliant pub, great music, great welcome, great atmosphere, great beer”.

3pm in the Tithebarn Workshops courtyard, a wealth of beautiful local crafts and a tea room.

All times are “Morris Time” i.e. approximate!
